In Huckleberry Finn, there are many instances in which we can see the theme of Freedom. Throughout the book, Jim strives for freedom from slavery, and to free his family also. On the other hand, Huck finds himself searching for freedom from the ideas of society. He really knows slavery is not right, but it is his internal battle whether to believe his head or his heart. He also wants freedom from civilization, resisting Miss Watson When she tries to make him a member of her society. FREEDOM! Bob Marley Conscience says to me 'What had poor Miss Watson done to you, that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word? What did that poor old woman do to you, that you could treat her so mean?...' I got to feeling so mean and so miserable I most wished I was dead.. Chapter 16, pg. 97 Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor pitiful rascals, it seemed like I couldn't ever feel any hardness against them any more in the world. It was a dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another. Chapter 33, pg. 253 We said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft. Chapter 23, pg 118 In Huckleberry Finn, there are several elements that relate to the theme of freedom. First, for Huck and Jim, the river is a symbol of freedom, because it is just them and they are sailing away from anything that had been holding them back. On the other hand, the canoe is a symbol for being trapped, because they are restrained to that area in the river. Huck wants to escape from the ideas of society, while Jim is the product of those ideas. It takes the whole book for Huck to overcome this moral dilemma, but he eventually does, and as society tries to pull him back in, he makes a run for it. This shows that Huck is finally free, and so is Jim at the end of the book. OPA! A Dove represents freedom. China got involved with Tibet, and the people want China out. poster yourself Again, nobody likes China Gimme Freedom!
